The veteran point guard will join the Miami Heat on a two-year deal worth $5.9 million, the team announced Friday.
Leonard, who is recovering from the torn Achilles tendon he suffered in January, was traded by the Los Angeles Lakers to the Celtics in exchange for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft and a 2019 second-round pick.
Leonards absence means the Celtics are now without one of their two biggest players.
The only player on the roster who has played in at least 60 games is rookie point guard Al Horford, who has averaged 8.8 points and 3.6 rebounds in 19.7 minutes per game.
The Celtics, meanwhile, have lost all five of their games against teams that currently rank among the top five in the Eastern Conference.
Boston’s loss means the Heat have lost four of their last five games.CAPTION Erik Spoelstra on closing time in the preseason.
